Tory Elections First Round Won By Rishi Sunak
The Conservative Party kicked off the first round of its leadership election, and Rishi Sunak emerged as the winner. He secured the most votes from his fellow party MPs, with a total of 63 out of 313 ballots cast.
Sunak, who is the Member of Parliament for Richmond (Yorks), has been in the House of Commons since 2015. He has held various roles in government, including Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and has been touted as one of the brightest up-and-coming stars of the Conservative Party.
The result of the first round of voting means that Sunak will progress to the next round of the election, alongside Boris Johnson, Jeremy Hunt, Michael Gove, Dominic Raab, Sajid Javid, and Matt Hancock.
A Strong First Round Performance
Sunak’s performance in the first round of voting was impressive, securing nearly 20% of the total ballots cast. He received endorsements from a number of high-profile MPs, including former Conservative Party leader William Hague, who described Sunak as “one of the most capable people I have ever worked with.”
Following his victory, Sunak thanked his fellow MPs for their support and pledged to focus on delivering Brexit and strengthening the country’s economy.
The Road To Downing Street
The Conservative Party leadership election is being closely watched by the British public and the international community, as the next Prime Minister will be tasked with leading the country through a crucial period of change, including negotiations with the European Union over Brexit.
Over the next few weeks, the remaining candidates will face two further rounds of voting, with the final two candidates going head-to-head in a vote of Conservative Party members. The winner of the leadership election will become Prime Minister, succeeding Theresa May who announced her resignation last month.
